There is a lady from my church named Cathy Hesse.  She mentors me, and is quite a wise and wonderful woman.  Her heart for the Lord radiates out daily, and to say that she is encouraging is truly an understatement.  The last couple of months I have gone through some tough struggles, and Cathy has been there.  She has shown me God’s love in so many different ways.  She lets me come over and do my laundry whenever, she feeds me, and she rescued me when we had no power a few weeks back.  In fact, a few of the college students at our church call her Mama Hesse.  Anyway, you get the point:  she’s awesome.  So about once a week or so she will send me an encouraging email, and she recently sent this one.  It’s from Pastor David Jeremiah.  Pastor David Jeremiah holds a special place in my heart because him and 6 other families (including mine) started a church in Ft. Wayne.  He led my dad to Christ, and has been friends with my grandparents for years.  So when she sent it I was extra excited.  I think it paints a really good picture of Christ’s love for us.  One thing that I have been learning the past few months is that God’s love is unconditional, and that truly amazes me.  I hope you enjoy this as much as I did.

Ocean Liner

A man’s heart plans his way, but the Lord directs his steps.

Someone
once described the sovereignty of God as being like an ocean liner
bound for port. While it is resolutely moving toward that destination,
there are passengers aboard who are free to move about as they will.
They are not in chains. In fact, they eat, sleep, play games, read, and
talk as they please. All the while, the liner is still headed toward
its predetermined port. It is a picture of both freedom and sovereignty
harmoniously taking place at the same time.

As children of
God, each of us has the Sovereign God as ruler in our hearts. This
means that no matter what happens in life and whatever decisions we
make, God resides in our hearts, steering us toward an ever-fixed mark.
This is a comforting truth because as humans, we don’t know what’s best
for our lives; and though we try to make good decisions, sometimes we
just make the wrong ones. It’s wonderful to know that while we’re busy
living and learning, God is at the helm of our life working all things
together for good (Romans 8:28).

In the total expanse of human
life, there is not a single square inch of which the Christ, who alone
is sovereign, does not declare, “That is mine!

  1. I love this…it is so encouraging to know God really is in control of everything and to know that He is working all things together for good!

  2. That is the most sensical illustration of that concept I have ever heard. It was encouraging to read. Thanks!

  3. Yes, I know David Jeremiah through the tv media. He preaches great messages. He truly is a man of God. He is a pastor, an under-shepherd who truly cares for God’s people, His sheep. Every message that I have heard Pastor David Message preach touches my heart. I don’t have the honor and the privilege to listen to him every sunday when I was in Honolulu. But all is not lost, as God is truly in control, I can still catch him on the internet. Whatever “the enemy means for evil, God will always turn it around for good, for His Glory”.
God Bless you for sharing the “Ocean Liner Story” and using you to touch others further, thank you. You are a blessing.
