Hello everyone!!

I live about 45 minutes away from the city of Detroit and despite our
bad rap, I love the city. Thursday we finally had our first 70 degree
day of the year. Yup, spring seems to have finally hit Michigan even
though we’re expecting more snow on Wednesday. Needless to say, I am
psyched for Kenya.

I attend Oakland University as a social work major. After studying
business for a while, I discovered that social work is actually what
will empower me to be the best leader for my non-profit, The Save
Africa Project. Despite having to still file some paperwork, we have
been able to provide scholarships to five boys and collect about 2,000
pairs of shoes for people who need them. I had the privelege of
meeting one of the boys who benefit from the sholarship program when I
visited Kenya last summer.

When I’m not in class, working, or running around trying to find
sponsors, recruiting volunteers, or returning emails & phone calls for
The SAP, I LOVE to cook, rock climb, be outside in general (when it’s
actually warm enough), act, and hang out with my wildly diverse groups
of friends.

  1. Hey Joelle! I’m a social work major too 🙂 You started you’re own organization?! thats fantastic! Can’t wait to hear more about it and meet you!

  2. Joelle, you’re so well spoken 🙂 I’m going to major in social work too. That’s so cool what you’re doing with your organization, I can’t wait to hear about it.

I know, I just said basically the exact same thing as Katie. But all of it is true 🙂

Hit me up on facebook or Skype! I’d love to talk to you more in-depth.

  3. Joelle,

I think it is so awesome that you have started a non-prof! I would love to do that sometime, so I’m sure I’ll be picking your brain in Kenya. I didn’t catch what year you said you were. I’m from Ft. Wayne which is 45 minutes south of Michigan…so I feel you on that cold weather! I look forward to meeting you! Can’t wait!

  4. Thanks everyone. I am pumped to meet all of you. Leah, I’m a sophomore… and I’ll be turning twenty on the trip. My nineteenth birthday was actually the first day I arrived in Kenya. Do we have any other birthdays on the trip?

  5. Hey Joelle! Well it’s very hot today in Texas, probably close to the mid 80’s! Can’t wait to get to know you better, I love that you’ve started your own non-profit!

  6. Joelle, Just to let you know you are appreciated on the left coast, and you and your ministry are being prayed for.God bless you for what you are doing. Despite all the chaotic things happening in the world, remember to stay focused. You will be supported through prayer and financial support. You go young lady. In Christ, Landis

  7. Regardless the problems the world faces, people in poor countries need food, shelter, clothing, shoes, and most important not to be forgotten. this is easy to do with chaos surrounding us. Joelle needs help to continue her ministry,do not forget what she is doing. She represents feet and a heart on the ground. We eat everday,we dress every day,(if we have shoes)we put them on everyday,we find shelter everyday.I have no doubt God with our help will be with Joelle in this endever. DO NOT FORGET!

  8. Thank you so much for your encouragement and support! Though our team has now been back for almost two years now, I think it is important to remember what we witnessed when we were there and know that we can still be having an impact on their lives from home.

  9. Why did I decide to support The Save Africa Project? Something we all should sit down and think about, even if it causes difficulties in your life. When an organization deeply feels there are ” MORE IMPORTANT THINGS IN LIFE THAN SELF”, Yes, I would be honored to support a team like this. In life we should do what we think is right, even if it does not alway’s turnout that way. I have no issues with any group who wishes to sacrfice to help others, and yes it is a sacrifice, for those that go. Fun and games? think again! This is a sacrifice for those that need all our help, pennies, dollars, prayer,(top of the list ) We can all do something. Please sit down, think about it anddo what you can. You wont regret it Landis

  10. In the 60’s rocket launch NASA mission control told astronaut and Ohio Senator John Glenn, ” God speed John Glenn”. God speed,Save Africa Project Team,on your trip to Africa. I will be with you always. Great comfort in that.
